Alternative approach for fracture fixation following implant infection in a <scp>Salter‐Harris type‐II</scp> fracture of the proximal phalanx in a Warmblood foal

A 2-day-old female Warmblood foal (70 kg) presented with a closed, displaced Salter-Harris type-II fracture of the proximal physis left hind first phalanx. The was repaired four 4.5 mm cortical screws and wire in figure-of-8 pattern applied on lateral medial aspect phalanx, respectively. screw additionally inserted lag-fashion to engage metaphyseal spike. Three days postoperatively, displacement distal fragment implant infection were apparent revision surgery performed. Previous implants removed two transphyseal lag-screws placed proximolateral–distomedial dorsoproximal–plantarodistal direction across line. Postoperatively, healed rapidly 6 weeks later. Nineteen months after removal, horse did not show any sign lameness, despite shortening phalanx compared contralateral limb. In cases postoperative instability infection, removal often becomes necessary. However, new cannot be safely previous location. To avoid this problem, report describes an alternative approach for positioning case
